Bleasdale Vineyards

What is Bleasdale all about?

In 1948 the privately owned property became a Company, Bleasdale Vineyards Pty. Ltd., with shareholders being A.B. Potts’ own family and several of his brothers.

Bleasdale kept pace, making its first varietal red, a Malbec, in 1961. In the winery, stainless steel tanks and refrigeration were installed. The sparkling wines entered our culture and, in 1964, Bremer Gold was released – the first of a large range of bubbles, including a “Sparkling Burgundy”. The range of varietal reds expanded and the whites followed.

Our People

Paul’s a bit like Langhorne Creek, hardly anyone outside the wine trade (or wine tragics like me) have even heard of him, yet he and the Bleasdale wines he makes have won loads of awards, including last year’s Jimmy Watson trophy and being named as the James Halliday ‘2018 Wine Maker of the Year’.

“Knowing what the vineyard needs to improve the wine is important, but you need to be patient”.

Our Vineyards

Conditions for grape growing in Langhorne Creek are ideal thanks to the natural fertility of the floodplain soils, the ability of these soils to retain moisture from natural winter floods, and the moderation of the local climate by cooling evening breezes from nearby Lake Alexandrina and the Southern Ocean in summer. The red varieties thrive in this rich environment, which explains why over 75 per cent of all wine grapes grown are red wine grapes.

The harnessing of the natural flooding of the Bremer River by early grape growers makes the Langhorne Creek region quite unique. Having purchased 100 acres of land in 1850, Frank Potts developed a system of levees and floodgates to capture and divert a metre of water and nutrient rich silt across the entire vineyard. The vigour in growth caused by this natural abundance of water sometimes presented challenges, but it is now managed by modern viticultural practices.
