Bream Creek Wines

What is Bream Creek Wines all about?

Bream Creek can be considered as one of the industry’s pioneering wineries. The vineyard at Bream Creek was planted in the early 1970s, making it amongst the earliest commercial vineyards planted in Tasmania. The Bream Creek brand was established by leading Tasmanian vigneron Fred Peacock back in 1990, at a time when there were less than 10 commercial wineries in the entire state. For 30 years Bream Creek wines have been consistent award winners, helping to showcase the very best of Tasmanian wines to Australia (and the rest of the world).

Bream Creek Vineyard Cabernet Merlot

2021

Gold Medal 2022 Asia Wine Trophy Competition

A traditional left bank Bordeaux blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Merlot, aged for 12 months in a combination of new and used French oak barrels. This classically styled blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot starts with an aromatic nose of plums, mulberries, blackcurrants and violets. The generous palate shows similar fruit flavours as well as Belgian chocolate and sage notes. The smooth and integrated tannins mean this wine can be cellared with confidence.

Our People

Fred Peacock was born in Hobart to a family with strong generational connections to the Tasmanian fruit and baking industries and graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Agricultural Science from the University of Tasmania

He joined the Department of Agriculture after graduating and, in the mid 1970s, was appointed as an Horticultural Officer. One of his initial responsibilities was the operation of the experimental Rowella Vine Block situated in the Tamar Valley, which involved testing upwards of 40 vine varieties for suitability to the Tasmanian climate. As the industry developed, He became more heavily involved with the selection and establishment of new vineyard sites and working with pioneers of the modern Tasmanian wine industry such as Graham Wiltshire of Heemskerk, Andrew (and David) Pirie of Pipers Brook and the Alcorso family at Moorilla, as well as other early vignerons.

The 2022 James Halliday Australian Wine Companion wrote that:

“Until 1990 the Bream Creek fruit was sold to Moorilla Estate, but since then the winery has been independently owned and managed by Fred Peacock, legendary for the care he bestows on the vines under his direction. Freds skills have seen both an increase in production and outstanding wine quality across the range, headed by the Pinot Noir. The list of trophies and gold, silver and bronze medals won is extensive. Freds expertise as a consultant is in constant demand.

Our Vineyards

Planted in 1974 on Tasmania’s east coast, Bream Creek is one of the state’s oldest vineyards. The original 5 hectares consisted mainly of Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon, with smaller plantings of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Gewurztraminer.

The vineyard was purchased by Fred Peacock in August 1990, who increased Pinot Noir plantings and introduced Sauvignon Blanc and Schonburger (one of the earliest commercial plantings in the Southern Hemisphere of this rare German varietal). With Fred's trademark dedication and passion, this pristine vineyard is now a showcase of grape varieties ideally suited to the cool maritime climate of East coast Tasmania.
