Philip Shaw

Elegant cool climate wines from Orange

An unconventional tradition

With the first vines being planted in 1988-89 by Philip Shaw, the Philip Shaw Winery story was first born.  The first commercial label for the winery was produced in 2004. The site for the vineyards and winery were chosen due to its high altitude and ancient volcanic soils. Today Philip’s son’s Daniel and Damian have taken ownership and management of the winery.  They continue the tradition and legacy created by their father Philip.

Winemaker

Daniel Shaw- Growing up in the Hunter Valley and bearing witness to the booming wine industry, meant a career in wine was inevitable for Daniel. Daniel was there by his father's side when the very first Philip Shaw vines were planted. During his studies, Daniel gained experience in regions across France and Italy and throughout grape-growing areas in Australia.

He has been the Red Winemaker for a large Californian producer and Group Winemaker for a large NZ producer. Daniel returned to the family winery in Orange to ply his craft in a more intimate setting away from the corporate side of the industry. His time is now spent developing a deeper knowledge of the environment around the vineyard and the connection to wine development. The winery is moving more towards a farming system that utilises organic principles.

Koomooloo Vineyard - One of the highest and coolest vineyards in Australia

Orange is one of only a handful of locations in Australia that are classified as High Altitude and defined as cool climate for making wine.

The vineyards sit at 900m altitude and decades of site knowledge to respond to climatic changes is one of the secrets to producing such fine examples of cool climate wine. The soils found in the vineyard are volcanic and are a mix of basalts and limestone dating from 12 million to 400 million years ago. Combined with the cool climate, ensures an interesting blend of natural advantages.

"Our style has been defined by Philip and his respect for the Koomooloo Vineyard. This respect drives our philosophy to winemaking."
