TarraWarra Estate

An internationally recognised artistic gem from the Yarra Valley.

Heritage, a vision and a deep sense of place

When Marc Besen arrived in Australia in 1947 he was thankful to find a place to call home that welcomed him with open arms.  Years later his vision would be to create a place that was beautiful and unique, a place that welcomed everyone, just like he was all those years ago.  In 1979 Marc and Eva Besen purchased the TarraWarra property which was to be a family retreat until the first hectares of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir were planted in 1983. Their shared love of Burgundy wines were becoming a reality.  Flash forward 40 years, the property sprawls across 400 hectares, including 28 hectares of vines, a nature reserve, cattle grazing,  kitchen garden, cellar door and restaurant.

Adam McCallum

After completing his studies in 2003, Adam set off to work in the famous Burgundy wine region in France. Returning to Australia he has worked in well-known wineries, including DeBortoli, Frankland Estate and McPherson Wines. The allure of heading back to Burgundy proved too strong and in 2012 Adam returned to immerse himself again in the famous wine region. Now settled at TarraWarra Estate, Adam is right at home crafting wines, including the flagship Burgundy classics - Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that TarraWarra Estate is renowned for.

The ultimate in winemaking & varietal expression

The word ‘Tarrawarra’ translates as ‘slow moving water’ in the language of the Woiwurrung people and it's the name for the area where the winery sits.

A unique cellar door awaits

The uniquely architectural styled subterranean cellar door was constructed in 2016 and features a large curved stone entrance with a dedicated tasting space, that leads out into an open working winery.  Attached is a generous-sized restaurant complete with deck and sweeping views of the surrounding area.

A generosity that reaches well beyond the vines

Established in 1978 by philanthropists and arts benefactors Marc (AC) and Eva (AO), The Besen Family Foundation has made many hundreds of thousands of dollars in grants available to initiatives and recipients involved in health / well-being, education, visual arts, performing arts and the Jewish community. These days Marc and Eva’s four children carry on the philanthropic legacy.

TarraWarra is, and always has been, one of the top-tier wineries in the Yarra Valley.
