Queensland - Darling Downs

Darling Downs vineyards in Queensland defy all odds to demonstrate that exciting boutique wines can be produced in a subtropical climate.

This famous grazing and farming region has been around for more than 150 years, centered around the town of Toowoomba. Wine production was a significant industry at the end of the 19th century, but it rapidly declined following Federation. It is possible that viticulture is just as suited to this region as it is to the Granite Belt or the South Burnett; This may be seen in the substantial size of the larger wine businesses, despite the fact that a number of smaller ones happily coexist. Although there are fewer visitors overall than in the Granite Belt or South Burnett, the greater interest in wine is more than compensated for.

THE SOIL

The extensive areas of vertosols (cracking clay soils), particularly black vertosols, of moderate to high fertility and available water capacity are largely responsible for the development of the region's strong and diverse agricultural industry.
