South Australia - Barossa Valley

The Barossa is widely recognized as Australia's most famous wine region by international wine writers, judges, retailers and consumers.

It has the longest uninterrupted winemaking and winegrowing family in the country, some of which are in the 7th generation. It has been a centre of innovation and production since the early 1900s. It is home to some of Australia's most unique varietal styles, Barossa Shiraz and some of the highest quality and most sought after varietals such as Penfolds Grange and Henschke Hill of Grace.

BAROSSA VALLEY SOIL BAROSSA VALLEY SOIL

THE SOIL

A complex system of valleys and winding hills creates a variety of slopes, sides and locations. Soils vary widely, but are classified from relatively unfertile clay loams to more sandy soils ranging from gray to brown to red. As in much of southeastern Australia, subsoil acidity is increasing, limiting root growth and vigor.
