Tasmania - Pipers River

One of the top things to do in North East Tasmania is visit the region's famous wineries.

Once an extension of the Tamar Valley, the Pipers River Wine Region is home to Tasmania's Pipers River Winery. Blessed with cool climates and coastal Bass Strait breezes, this Tasmanian wine region is best known for producing some of Australia's most awarded and respected sparkling wines. There are wineries like the Bay of Fires, where you can sample some of Australia's most award-winning sparkling wines, and other smaller wineries where you can meet the winemakers themselves. But deciding which Pipers River Winery to go to is not an easy task. Wineries may be few in number, but each one offers its own flavor and incorporates regional wines.

THE CLIMATE

Pipers River, like the Coal River and Derwent Valley to the south, has a maritime climate with a lot of sunshine hours, making it a great mesoclimate for viticulture. The sunny vineyards on this side of the island are kept cool by cool winds from the Bass Strait.

THE SOIL

Iron-rich volcanic soils make it easy for vines with deep roots to drain well and thrive. The dry, porous top soils encourage the vines to look deeper into the ground for water. Many of the region's vineyards are dry-farmed, reducing the need for irrigation and boosting grape concentration.
