The Tamar River supplies the vineyards and flows from Launceston to the white sand beaches of Bass Strait. Perfect for road trips and weekend getaways.

A mix of great produce, cool-climate wines, and natural and man-made attractions. It stretches over 60 kilometers northwest from the city of Launceston to both shores of the River Tamar. Tamar Valley has it all. A wonderfully fertile valley with highly productive vineyards famous for Chardonnay, sparkling wine, Pinot Noir and aromatic white wines. Tasmania is Australia's oldest wine region and today the valley produces 40% of Tasmania's premium wines.

THE CLIMATE

The conditions for growth in this area are greatly influenced by maritime influences from the Bass Strait. As they cross the strait, the prevailing winds from continental Australia are cooled, and when they reach the vineyards, they cool the sun-warmed vineyards. The north-facing slopes on the river's southern banks are perfectly positioned to receive these winds and the sun's rays while also preventing frost.

THE SOIL

The iron-rich soils of the Tamar Valley, which provide the vines with a well-drained base, also add to the terroir. Because the ground beneath vines holds water rather than the topsoil, vines must grow deep to stay hydrated. In addition to ensuring that there is rarely a need for irrigation, this results in vines that are robust and healthy.
