Despite the fact that plantings continued until the middle to the end of the 1800s, the Yarra Valley stopped producing wine by the end of 1921 due to the growing popularity of fortified wines.
When vines were planted at the Wantirna Winery in 1963, winemaking resumed. Mount Mary, Yarra Yering, Warramate, Seville Estate, Chateau Yarrinha (now De Bortoli), Yarra Barn, and Morgan Vineyards were among the Valley's first founding wineries in the decade that followed. St. Hubert and Jellingburg, two of them, have been restored.
The summers don't get too hot, and the winters are often misty and wet, so it's generally quite cool here.
The Yarra Valley has two major and radically different soil types:grey-brown sandy loam on the northern side and younger, red volcanic soil on the southern side.
