Its importance as a wine region is frequently overshadowed by the well-known Margaret River next door, despite its forested cliffs, majestic mountains, meadows, and urban landscape steeped in history. The Great Southern is a relatively new wine region. Western Australian viticulturalists provided the impetus for the mid-1960s establishment of an experimental vineyard near Mount Barker. It is located in an ancient, rugged, and pristine environment that borders the south coast of Western Australia.
