Western Australia - Great Southern

If wine regions across Australia were ranked according to the 'bigger is better' ethos, Western Australia's Great Southern would take the top spot.

It is the largest region in Australia by area and the second-largest producer of wine grapes in Western Australia. Its importance as a wine region is frequently overshadowed by the well-known Margaret River next door, despite its forested cliffs, majestic mountains, meadows, and urban landscape steeped in history. The Great Southern is a relatively new wine region. Western Australian viticulturalists provided the impetus for the mid-1960s establishment of an experimental vineyard near Mount Barker. The grapes are Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon, two of his cultivars that continue to be popular in the region to this day. In 1975, the wines produced on these plantations were highly regarded.
