THE CLIMATE

The Hunter Valley has a mild climate with four distinct seasons. In some parts of New South Wales, the seasons can be mixed with consistently warm weather. However, the Hunter Valley is not bisected. The region has hot summers and freezing winters, making it a daunting task for vineyard managers. Still, with mountains surrounding him on three sides of the region, the region is a thriving wine region, helping to soften the sun and control the humidity in the valley floor.

THE SOIL

Soil is another important factor in growing grapes. The soil types found in the Hunter region are dual. It is most abundantly found in Australia compared to other parts of the world. The soil is a reddish-brown clay, low fertility soil with a pH of 6 and contains mainly nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, which are conducive to the growth of grapes. In addition, it is easy to absorb water because it has excellent drainage properties. The Hunter Valley also has other types of soil that contribute to variability in grape quality, such as sandy and loamy soils that are better suited to growing grapes.
