Brought out from Germany by the Macarthur family (of sheep-breeding fame) in 1838, Johann Stein carried with him the first cuttings of Rhine Riesling to survive in Australia. Under his supervision the Macarthur’s Camden Park vineyard flourished as one of the earliest wineries in Australia. Johann’s brother, Jacob, then went on to establish his own vineyard called “Sandal Farm” on Prospect Creek near Carramar, in Sydney’s South-West.
This family tradition of winemaking has since been continued by Robert and Lorna’s grandson, Jacob Stein, returning to the family business in 2009 as chief winemaker. Jacob returned to Mudgee, after having worked 7 vintages both abroad and nationally, to add a new dimension to the family winemaking business.

BRONZE MEDAL - 2021 Mudgee Wine Show
2021
We picked the Riesling and Shiraz for this wine from our vineyard on the same day and co-fermented the two varietals together in stainless steel to achieve the lift of the Riesling through the Shiraz. This wine was aged in seasoned French & American oak for 8 months, to achieve softness and delicacy of flavour without overpowering the soft fruit flavours.
The family tradition of grape growing and wine making was revived by Robert and Lorna Stein with the establishment of a vineyard in Mudgee, NSW. Starting with just 2 hectares of Shiraz the vineyard was further expanded through the help of friends and family to its current size. Robert and Lorna’s son Andrew Stein, who helped with establishing the vineyard, then made Mudgee his home in 2005. The vineyard and winery have grown to become a successful enterprise, earning a reputation as one of Mudgee, and NSW, premier quality wine producers.

The first blocks in the vineyard were planted by Robert in 1976 and these have been extended over the years to now encompass about 12ha (30 acres). Most the vineyard is situated 550m above sea level and on a gently sloping sight. The soils ranging from shale to quartz in the upper part of the vineyard and moving to richer more loamy as you move down the slope.
Being at this altitude means the vineyard receives the warm days cool nights required for the grapes to develop mature flavours while retaining their freshness and natural acidity that helps to produce a quality wine.
With a family winegrowing lineage dating back to 1838, the vineyard, which was established in 1976, is now producing award-winning reds, whites and fortifieds.
At Robert Stein there are beautiful panoramic views of the Mudgee district, a vintage motorcycle display and a cellar door offering wine tastings and sales. It is also home to the Pipeclay Pumphouse Restaurant. We look forward to seeing you at the cellar door to enjoy the fruits of our labours.
