The Cole River Valley wine region is still young, with the first wineries popping up in the 1970s and several boutique cellar doors opening since then. There aren't many wineries to choose from, but each one is a personal experience showcasing Tasmania's great flavours.
Tasmania's cool climate benefits the Coal River Valley as temperatures rarely exceed 25°C (77°F). Hills to the north and east protect the vineyards from western weather and bring the sunshine into the vineyards.
The hillside vineyards are supported by alluvial sandy soils with a high proportion of clayey sandstone. This fragile soil is generally backed by slopes to provide adequate drainage for vineyards to restrict plant growth, while clay helps retain sufficient moisture so little irrigation is required. There is none.
