THE CLIMATE

The predominant south-west sea breezes from the Indian Ocean change the excessively warm temperatures in this area. The summers are dry, but the winters get a lot of rain and have a lot of relative humidity.

THE SOIL

Limestone serves as the ancestor of the coastal tuart sands. A further help to viticulture is a permanent water table at a depth of three to fifteen meters (10 to 49 feet). However, due to the low natural fertility, care must be taken to get the best results. Donnybrook's traditional farming and orchard land has soils that are either gravelly sandy loams or heavier soils that are derived from the gneissic country rock in the valleys. These soils are richer.
